Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer

I've tried scanning through the HPSmart App, and I get the same message every time, "Scanner in use. Please try again when available."

I've tried uninstalling the HPSmart App and using Microsoft's Scan App on multiple PCs, both USB and wirelessly, but I get the message, "The scanner is busy. Wait for the scanner to finish and then try again, or close software using the app."

When I try scanning directly on printer panel it just tells me to download the HPSmart App.
I've tried resetting printer, Removing printer from PC and Reassigning. Nothing works.
When using HP Print and scan doctor, it keeps getting stuck on Windows (WIA) Scan.
I've stopped the WIA process, restarted it, making sure it is on automatic, but the HP Print and scan doctor still gets stuck on Windows (WIA) Scan.

I'm so stuck. Is there anyone else whom could offer any more advice?

Hi @WperiodBperiod,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing scanner issues with your HP OfficeJet 5255 All-In-One Printer.

I suggest that you follow the steps listed below to update the firmware from HP Smart App.

1. Go to 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS, iPad OS), or HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (Mac) (if not installed).

2. After completing the printer setup, click or tap on the printer’s name.

NOTE: Menu names, locations, and available settings vary by printer model.

3. Under Advanced, select Printer Home Page (EWS) or Advanced Settings.

4. Click or tap Tools or Web Services.

5. Click or tap Printer Updates or Product Update, and then click or tap Check Now.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day ahead.
