The scanner lamp bulb is on only 1/3 of the way, prints and scans out only 1/3 of the document. the rest is black. Does it need the lamp replaced? But why does it stay on then come off while moving to the left?

I will try and assist. This sounds to me like the flat ribbon cable on the scanner assemble is damaged. As the head moves to a specific place the cable goes open circuit and scan black.Hope this helps.

I think it would be worth replacing the cable.Sure that you will be able to find that part from HP.
Hope this will help.
