HP LaserJet MFP M29W
macOS 10.15 Catalina

My HP LaserJet MFP M29W Printer/Scanner/Copier is connected to my Mac via USB cable, without Wi-Fi even being turned on, on the Mac. Although I was able to print, HP Easy Scan ("Scanner reported an error. HP LaserJet MFP M29w is currently unavailable.") and the Mac's Image Capture ("No camera or scanner connected") reported that there was no scanner available.

The HP LaserJet MFP M29W control panel has a button that turns wireless on and off. Someone in my house had inadvertently pushed the button turning it off. Turning it back on made the scanner immediately available.

This seems crazy. Scanning, just like printing is done via USB cable. Does anyone have an idea as to why this would be so? Thanks.

Hi @mbaker

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Turning off the wireless feature should not affect the scanner functionality. Let us try these steps:

Do you have an anti-virus program installed on the MAC?

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

In HP Easy Scan, click the Scanner drop-down menu, and then select your printer.

If your printer does not display, click Browse Scanners, and then select your printer from the list.

Clicking Browse Scanners to find a printer

If the issue persists,

Update HP Easy Scan: Open HP Easy Scan. On the upper bar, click HP Easy Scan, click Check for Updates, and then install any available updates.

Checking for updates in HP Easy Scan

You may try connecting the printer to a different USB port on the MAC and check if that helps.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your reply Kumar0307. My problem was already solved when I turned wireless back on. I had already tried all of the steps you outlined, trying a different port, rebooting computer and printer, updating software, etc. I know it makes no sense. I completely agree. I posted what I did to alert other users and HP. Problem solved.
