Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have found other people have the same problem but it has not really been solved. I seems whenever I need to scan something it takes me an hour to get the printer to work properly.

It starts with an error message on the printer ... OXC4EB92C3 ... fixed by a restart.

Then when getting to the scan software on the PC, click the scan button and it produces an error ... Unable to communicate with printer. So I found the fix ... a hard restart with no surge protection. Problem is I have to do this about 5 times.

Another problem that is unresolved is the 5540 software update which causes the printer to print in greyscale only and disables 2 sided printing. Maybe there is a fix for this but any subsequent update is likely to overwrite the fix ... and the problem returns. So I now have to disable automatic updates

Welcome to HP Support Community

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from Root Level and download the Full Feature Software and the Firmware

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software and the Firmware from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions

Try printing or scanning and let me know how it goes 😊

No ... I should not have to do this. It is an HP software problem and there are many others with the same problem.

Sending people on wild goose chases hoping they will give up is not a useful answer.

If it is a hardware problem, as I suspect, then it would be better if HP just admitted it.

I have spent many hours on this and am not willing to spend any more time without a garanteed fix.

Stop wasting peoples time.

I was called by HP support.

Went through the problem and was told the problem is hardware, probably the scan actuator. Called the supplier and a replacement is on its' way.

As part of the checks I re-installed the HP website software and the problem with printing was solved ... so I have resumed automatic updates.
