Laserjet Pro MFP M280nw
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Each time I try to make a copy, I receive either Scanner Error 17 (turn off then turn on) or Scanner Error 23 (turn off then turn on). When I get the first message (17) I turn off and turn on but them I immediately get the second (23). I can print and scan but when I try to copy, the same problem reoccurs. This must be the 15th time I have tried!

@LauraFrance,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

Scanner Error 17 refers that the scanner motor is in the incorrect position.

Scanner Error 23 refers that the scanner calibration failed.

Let's try these steps, this may fix the issue.

Step 1: Power Reset.

  • Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait at least 60 seconds
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • Try copying/scanning a document.

Let me know if this helps.
