Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer

I can print, but can't scan after updating to macOS 14 Sonoma - and then 14.1.  I'm using an HP OfficeJet 6958. Called Apple and the agent indicated "Library/Image Capture/Devices/HP Scanner 3.app isn't compatible with macOS Sonoma at this time."  This makes sense considering macOS14 Sonoma doesn't appear in the HP website drop-down menu, nor does the previous macOS 13 Ventura.  So it seems HP needs to update their scanner driver in order to be compatible with the latest macOS.  BTW, I called HP support (800-407-4005) and was placed on hold for 39 minutes before giving up.  For now, the only solution seems to be reverting to an older macSO in order to scan. Has anybody found another workaround?

Hi @MrForeman,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It appears that you are facing compatibility issues with the HP scanner driver and macOS 14 Sonoma. If HP has not released an updated driver for your scanner model that is compatible with the latest macOS version, you may encounter difficulties using the scanning functionality.

Here are a few potential workarounds or solutions you can try.

  1. Check for Updates: Keep an eye on the HP support website for any driver updates specifically designed for macOS 14 Sonoma. HP often release updates to ensure compatibility with the latest operating systems.

  2. Use Apple's Image Capture: If you're unable to find an updated driver, you can try using Apple's built-in scanning application called Image Capture. Connect your HP scanner, open Image Capture (you can find it in the Applications > Utilities folder), and see if your scanner is detected. It may work with basic scanning functions without needing a specific driver.

  3. Downgrade macOS: If all else fails and scanning is critical for your workflow, you may consider reverting to an older version of macOS that is compatible with your HP scanner until an updated driver becomes available.

Always be cautious when downgrading your operating system, as it may have implications for other software and features on your Mac.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
