Hi @dwiese6941 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is connected to Wi-Fi Direct but isn't showing the option to scan to your computer.

Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Steps to Fix the Issue:

Ensure the Printer is Connected to Your Network (not just Wi-Fi Direct):

  • Wi-Fi Direct allows printing and scanning directly from a mobile device or computer without a router, but for full functionality (like scanning to a computer), the printer should be connected to the same local network as your computer.
  • Verify that your printer is connected to your home or office Wi-Fi network, not just Wi-Fi Direct:
    • On the printer's display panel, navigate to Network Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard, and ensure the printer is connected to your main Wi-Fi network.

HP Smart App:

  • Download the HP Smart app if it's not installed already. This app allows easier scanning to your computer.
  • Once installed, open the HP Smart app and ensure your printer is added. The app provides scan options that should enable scanning directly to your computer.

Enable Scan to Computer:

  • Open HP Printer Assistant on your PC (search for it from the Windows Start menu).
  • Go to the Scan section and click on Manage Scan to Computer.
  • Ensure the Scan to Computer is enabled.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Outdated drivers can cause functionality issues. Visit the HP Support page for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and download the latest drivers and firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Ensure you install the Full Feature Software and Driver package, as it includes both print and scan drivers.

Firewall Settings:

  • Check if your firewall is blocking the communication between the printer and computer. Add exceptions for HP applications if necessary:
    • Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Ensure HP Smart and other HP-related applications are allowed.

Reboot Devices:

  • Restart your printer, computer, and router to refresh the connections between the devices.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
