@Ashepherd7

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did you make any changes to your printer?
  • Could you please share the picture of the error screen?
  • Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz? If yes, make sure the dual-band has different SSIDs for 2.4G and 5G networks.

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

This happened to me too, and has been this way since about the mid of June, 2021 I believe. It's very frustrating, and time consuming to scan a document to my computer, then go to my email and attach it. It was working just fine, and then all of a sudden it stopped working. I used to be able to touch the "Apps" button on my printer screen, then "scan to email" and start. But now it gives me the error message: "The printer could not connect to web services. The server might be busy or temporarily unavailable. Try again later." But later it never works. I have tried all of the fixes like turning on and off, trying to add new drivers, but they won't download, -nothing works. I have an HP Officejet Pro 6978 Printer. My internet has excellent signal strength, so I know it isn't the internet. So what is the Web Services? And HP, please fix this soon.

I am looking for a fix to the following problem. My HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 won't scan to email anymore. I believe this started back at the end of June, or early July. I am working from home and need this capability. When you click on the scan to email app on the printer, the error message says, "The printer could not connect to Web Services. The server might be busy or temporarily unavailable." What is Web Services, and why is it giving this error message when our internet is connected and working fine? I have tried re-downloading the HP hardware, but it wouldn't let me finish, because it gave a similar error message about not being able to connect. I am STILL connected to the internet, so I am not understanding the problem. Please advise as to a fix to this problem.

Thanks,

Terry

I tried Echo Lake's, the HP consultant's idea to fix the problem, but it didn't work. I still get the same error message. Any new ideas?

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I understand that you enable to scan to email with HP Officejet 6978.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  • Step 1: Make sure your printer supports Web Services
  • Step 2: Check the network and printer connection status
  • Step 3: Restart the computer, printer, and router
  • Step 4: Turn on Web Services from the Embedded Web Server (EWS)
  • Step 5: Check the Internet proxy server settings
  • Click here: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05337026 to complete the troubleshooting steps.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have been having the same frustrating, maddening problem. Please explain how to check/enable web services. If the printer is printing normally through a wireless connection, doesn't that suggest that web services are enabled?

Further my last post, where does one find settings for "Embedded Web Server?"

@jkla

Thank you for posting back.

Using the printer EWS to turn on Web Service might resolve any communication issues with the printer control panel.

  1. Print a Network Configuration Page.

    • Printers with LCD and text-based control panels: Print the page from the Wireless, Network Settings or Setup menu.

    • Printers with basic control panels (buttons only): Print the page using the button combinations on the printer control panel. For some printers, press the Wireless  and Information  buttons simultaneously, or press the Wireless and Start Copy Black  buttons at the same time.

For detailed instructions to print a Network Configuration Page, go to HP Customer Support, type your printer model, and then search for the document to 'print a self-test page.'

  2. On the Network Configuration Page, locate the URL(s) for Embedded Web Server address.

NOTE: If the URL for the EWS is http://0.0.0.0, the printer is not connected to a network. Reconnect your printer to the network, and then continue troubleshooting.

  3. On your computer, open an Internet browser.

  4. Type the URL address for the EWS in the browser address bar, and then press Enter.

NOTE: Make sure to type the IP address into the Internet browser's address box. If typed into a toolbar search box or search engine, the EWS does not open.
  5. If a website security certificate displays in the Internet browser, click Continue.

The EWS webpage for the printer opens, which confirms that the printer is on the same network as the computer.

  6. On the EWS webpage, click the Web Services tab.

  7. On the Web Services Setup page, click Continue, Turn On, or Enable, and then follow the on-screen instructions
