HP Officejet 4500
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Started getting Printer Offline error messages when trying to print using USB cable.  Uninstalled and reinstalled original SW disk and performed all required updates, trouble shooting, etc.  Have printer working via wireless now, but no scanning options.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Step 1: Uninstall the software by going to control panel > programs > uninstall a program > HP Officejet 4500 and Install the HP Full-featured software for your printer from here, choose the right drivers by checking your printer model number.

Once you have installed the software you can try to scan, if it doesn't work try the next step

Step 2: Download and run Print and scan doctor- diagnostics tool from here, if it doesn't work try the next step

Step 3: You can also use these 2 options to scan :

  • Microsoft Paint (All Windows versions): Search Windows for paint, and then open the Paint desktop app. Click File or the menu icon  , and then click From scanner or camera.

  • Windows Fax and Scan (All Windows versions): Search Windows for fax to open the desktop app, and then click New Scan.

Let me know if this works.

Since nothing else worked I tried your #3 and #4 suggestions.  Using Paint I discovered the Scan icon was grayed out.

Using the Fax feature, I need more information on how to find the desktop app.  So far everything I tried did not give me a scan option.

Thank you for trying the above steps, since it did not work and the scan option is greyed out, we will have to do a Root-level uninstallation of the HP drivers that could be present in the root folders of the computer.

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers

NOTE: If you have already uninstalled it from the control panel, perform the steps from Step 5

Once done, restart the computer and download a fresh copy of drivers from here (you will have to choose the right model number among the available ones here: G510a-f, G510n-z, G510g-m)

For Windows Fax and Scan,

  1. Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.
  2. Select New scan >Try to scan

let me know if this helps.
