My scans and copies with the ADF had a vertical black line on the right side.  I tried cleaning the glass with a microfiber cloth several times but still got the line.

I then tried using an old product I had called KleenFax, it is a corrugated sheet with a fiber backing on the cleaning side along with a cleaning solution spray.  I fed this through the ADF and it came out with many black smudges.

My documents are now nice and clean.  Unfortunately the photo of the smudged KleenFax sheet couldn't be uploaded due to size.

@hpocd,

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with scanning and printing from the ADF. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 I will be delighted to assist you here.

For better clarity, and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a recent power outage or surge?
  • Did you make copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer?

This issue could be hardware related. We need to isolate the issue first to be hardware or software related.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.

If it copies correctly without hassles then please follow these steps to uninstall and reinstall the printer software and this should fix the issue.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-... and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix it for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient.Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 😉

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Thank you Raj1788 for the detailed posting and links, I think the section on cleaning the ADF rollers applied to my issue.  How would I open the cover of the ADF?  Pull hard on it till it pops open?

However, I think my solution was a lot easier with the KleenFax paper and solution.Scan with vertical line issueScan with vertical line issueScan after KleenFaxScan after KleenFaxKleenFax paper with smudgesKleenFax paper with smudges

@hpocd,

It is nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the update and your patience and time are greatly appreciated. You've displayed terrific persistence, superb technical skills coupled with an immaculate attitude to try and resolve the issue, Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂 As@Raj1788 is out for the day, I am responding on his behalf.

Steps to Clean ADF rollers:

Step 2: Clean the ADF rollers

Dust or paper residue on the rollers or separator pad inside the automatic document feeder (ADF) can result in copy quality issues.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that does not come apart or leave fibers

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  2. Remove the original document from the ADF.

  3. Turn the printer off, disconnect the power cord, and then open the ADF cover.

  4. Find any paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF. These parts have a rubber covering.

Paper pick rollers and separator pad in the ADF

  5. Lightly dampen the cloth with the water, squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth, and then wipe any residue off the rollers and separator pad.

  6. Leave the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the parts to dry, and then close the cover.

  7. Reconnect the power cord, turn on the printer, and then start a copy job.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Reset the printer and check the power source

Reset the printer to clear certain error states by calibrating the copier mechanism, and then check the power source to confirm the printer is getting enough power to operate the copier.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then wait 60 seconds.

  4. If you previously connected the power cord to a power strip or multi-plug outlet adapter, reconnect the cord directly to a wall outlet to ensure the printer is getting enough power.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

  6. If you have an HP DeskJet 3700 series printer, calibrate the scanner after resetting the printer.

  7. Load the original document or photo, and then start a copy job.

    • If the issue persists, connect the printer power cord to a different wall outlet to determine if the original outlet is causing the issue.

If the issue continues even after this, then try to perform the steps under the print quality document given in the previous post.

If the issue still persists, then contact HP phone support to get the printer replaced as it could be faulty I am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.

Please follow the steps from the previous post to contact HP phone support. A one to one intereaction in real time with them should help.

Good Luck and keep me posted.

Thanks David for the roller cleaning info, how hard do I pull on ADF cover to get it open?  There's a bit of resistance and I don't want to break anything.  However my Kleenfax solution eliminates that task.
