HP 8740

I have purchased a new HP8740 about three weeks ago and all has worked well until today.

I now have black vertical lines down the scan or photocopy.

I first turned the printer off for 30 seconds and put the power plug directly into the wall.  This did not work.

I turned it off - unplugged it for 5 minutes - but still has the black lines.

Can someone please suggest something else I can try.

Hello @gouldian, Thank you for your reply.

The only difference between scanning from the flatbed and by using the ADF is where the scanning occurs. The ADF uses the narrow (1” wide) glass strip towards the left-hand side of the glass bed to scan. So ideally cleaning the White ADF scanner lid strip and Glass ADF scanner strip should have resolved the issue.

I would suggest you to do a blank copy on ADF, keep the page facing you and clean thoroughly the place you get the line in scanner strip & the white plastic strip.

If the issue still pertains I would suggest you to clean the ADF mechanism itself. You can watch an HP video http://hp.care/2bYt7Qu which will help you do this. The video is done using an Officejet 8600 printer, but it is same for your printer as well.

Please let me know what happens. Thanks!

Cheers 🙂

Hello @gouldian, Greetings!

Thank you for joining HP forums 🙂 I would like to help you with the copy issue on your Officejet 8740 printer.

Going through your post I understand that you are getting vertical lines in your copies and scans. Could you please check for the prints from your computer as well? If the prints are good, then the issue can be resolved by some thorough cleaning in specific areas on the printer. Please check the below fig:

Use a lint-free cloth soaked in distilled water or glass cleaner and clean the specified areas thoroughly. This should fix the issue.

Please let me know if it helps!

Cheers 🙂

Hello Maureen, Thanks for your reply.

Thank you for following the troubleshooting steps.

I would like to know few other details to better assist you.

•    Is the printing from the computer working fine?
•    The vertical lines in copies / scans – Is it happening with both flat-bed glass as well as ADF (Document feeder at the top) or is it specific while doing copy from Flatbed or ADF?

Please reply back with these details so that i can provide you with some additional steps.
Cheers 🙂

•    Is the printing from the computer working fine?   Yes this is fine
•    The vertical lines in copies / scans – Is it happening with both flat-bed glass as well as ADF (Document feeder at the top) or is it specific while doing copy from Flatbed or ADF?  No the black lines are not occuring when I scan from the flatbed.

Only from the ADF.
