Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

When I try to scan, screen says my printer is not connected - it is, it will print, it's a new computer so I am new to this awful Microsoft system, maybe that's the problem.  Although I don't have to scan very often, it worked fine with the old computer and I would like to be able to use it.

Not everyone is a fan of every Operating System - good that there are plenty of options.

If you are using Windows for the first time after using a different choice, then yes - though the goal is the same, the preparation is perhaps different.

Assuming these are two separate comments (from the subject line)

"Will print"

"Not Wireless"

True - the printer can be used without a Wireless connection.

Options for "not wireless"

  • USB Printer Cable  - Works, though in general, it works best with the Full Driver printer software and less so trying to use (for example) HP Smart (app).
  • Wi-Fi Direct - Wireless that uses the printer's wireless radio to connect directly to your computer (no router).  Although not all features are available, the connection method is appropriate for some situations.

What is happening?

IF you are standing at the printer and clicking "Scan", then

If "a screen tells me" is meant to describe the printer control panel,

then

Depending on the wording, the message on the printer control panel might mean that the computer -- needed to complete the scan operation from the printer -- is not found.

If this is the case, the solution:

Install the Full Driver printer software (Full Feature Software)

AND

After the printer software is installed, enable "Manage Scan to Computer" in the Printer Assistant.

===============================================

What else?

What you do depends on

How the printer is connected to either the network or the computer,

AND

The application or software you have installed on the computer

AND

Which of the apps or software programs you are using

AND

At what point (and where) you are seeing the "not connected" message.

Assuming you are confident in all of these points,

Try / Consider

Restart everything, including (if using) the router that controls your network.

If you have questions about any of these checkpoints, perhaps tell us more about the rest of what you are seeing.

Printer - Full Feature Software

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver. No Sign-in required.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

If using USB, connect the printer cable only when asked to do so, near the end of the installation of the software.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

Note Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut

Apparently I wasn't clear in my question - this is not a new printer, it's a new computer which I was forced to buy because Microsoft went to Windows 11, thus making my trusty old computer obsolete.  Scanner function always worked before.  Now I can print and copy but not scan.  However in further pursuit of an answer, I see that HP has a banner announcing that the scan function on my Envy 5330 will not function with Windows 11,  HP no longer produces the necessary driver so it has to be downloaded from the Microsoft store and then installed and then you can contact HP for instructions.   So far Windows 11 just seems to make everything more difficult and/or time consuming.

OK -

I can see that I am perhaps not the right one to have answered -- I will try again to understand what you need.

If you are still reading...

I have missed something...

OK...

It is not clear what you are doing - where the original "screen" is displayed, where you are seeing a banner saying the printer is not supported in Windows 11 (untrue), and which application or software you are using.

Can / would you clarify?

It is not clear whether "Not wireless" (subject line) means you are not connected to Wireless because you cannot do so or whether you are not connected because you do not wish to (or cannot) use a Wireless Connection.  Perhaps you mean something else entirely?

Can / would you explain again?

If the printer is not connected to the network, it is true that HP Smart will either not work or might not work as expected.

Another try...

Scan to Computer is a feature available in the Full Feature Software.

HP Smart - the Windows application - is available from  Microsoft Store

The app is not the same thing as the full driver software.

True - HP Smart supports print and scan for PDF and Photo / Image files.

True, too - the app should work in Windows 11.

Should the application not work, the reason might be one of several things, including and not limited to:

  • You are not signed into the HP Smart application with your HP Account credentials
  • The printer is not added to the HP Smart Application
  • The printer is not able to be added because the printer is not connected to your network
  • The printer is added to HP Smart but is tangled in the setup of the app

Try restarting both the computer and the printer.
