What is the Operating system installed on your computer?
Did you make any changes to the PC recently?
Uninstall the drivers completely(refer to steps on my previous reply) and try installing the printer using Windows Built-in drivers.
Refer to this document for help.
If the issue persists, share the screenshot of the error message.
Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your message. Yes, I am able to print. The Deskjet is connected via wireless. I have been using "HP Scan and Capture". I have also tried Microsoft's "Fax & scan" and it fails in much the same way. If I connect the PC directly to the Deskjet (I.e. still using wireless but not going via the hub) then I am able to scan and save as hitherto.

I have run the Print and Scan Doctor two or three times but to no avail. On the first occasion, it said that I did not have the required software installed on the PC and offered to install it. I accepted this offer but when I ran the Doctor for a second time it said the same thing.

Are you able to make copies on the printer?
I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:
1)In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2) Select your HP Printer
3) Select Uninstall
4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”
😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab
9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10) Select Ok
11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12) Close Devices and Printers.
Download and install the latest software for your printer from here.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

Things are getting worse. Now the printer/scanner does not show up in the list of devices at all so I can neither print nor scan. The printer does show up on my wife's PC so, arguably, this is a problem with the PC rather than the printer. Nevertheless if you have any advice to give I would be grateful.
