HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw

I am making a single page, single sided copy using the touchscreen on the printer itself and feeding Letter size paper from Tray 2.

When copying using the ADF, the scanner scans the page in one pass and prints the copy.  However when copying from the flatbed, the scanner scans the page once, pauses, then scans the same page a second time and then prints the single copy.  This makes copying slower and adds unnecessary wear-and-tear on the scanner mechanism.

Same thing with the Copy Preview, it scans the document on the flatbed twice before displaying the Preview.

I believe that when I bought the printer a few years ago the firmware that came with the printer did not scan twice to copy a page from the flatbed but a later firmware that was automatically downloaded to the printer changed this behavior so that it scans the page twice before copying.

I found that if I go into the copy settings and change the "Original Size" setting from "Automatically Detect" to "Letter (8.5x11)" then the scanner will only scan once then print immediately (or display Preview) afterwards.

So I have concluded that the machine is scanning the first time to do original page size detection and then scanning the second time to do the actual scan for Copying or Preview.

But why??? Why can't the page size detection function use the information from the FIRST scan to simultaneously do both page size detection and to print the copy?  Why does it have to do TWO scans?

Can an engineer at hp please look into this and fix this.  Obviously the ADF scanner can do page detection and printing in one scan of the page, so why is there a need for the flatbed to do two scans of the page for the same thing!!!

In the interim I have logged into the web interface of the printer and set the default Original Page Size to Letter.  I would like to be able to leave it set to Automatic Detection so that I don't have to keep changing it when I need to Copy something other than Letter size.

Hi @FM82,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

he behavior you're describing, where the flatbed scanner scans twice before copying or displaying a preview, is likely due to the page size detection process that occurs in the first scan. This issue may indeed be linked to a firmware update that altered the scanning protocol for the flatbed.

Here are some steps you can take to mitigate or potentially resolve the issue:

Verify and Update Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes newer updates can fix bugs introduced in previous versions. Visit the HP support website, download the latest firmware for the OfficeJet Pro 8610, and update your printer if necessary.

Change Default Copy Settings:

  • As you have found, setting the "Original Size" to "Letter (8.5x11)" instead of "Automatically Detect" avoids the double scan. You can set this as the default to avoid having to change it each time. Here’s how you can do it:
    1. Access the printer's web interface by entering the printer's IP address in a web browser.
    2. Navigate to the copy settings and change the default original size to "Letter".

Check for Other Settings:

  • Sometimes, other settings related to quality or color mode can influence scanning behavior. Ensure that settings like "Scan Resolution" or "Color Mode" are set to defaults that don’t require additional processing steps.

Reset the Printer to Factory Settings:

  • Resetting the printer to its factory settings might resolve the issue if it is related to misconfigured settings or firmware glitches. Note that this will erase all custom settings, so you might need to reconfigure your printer afterward.
    1. On the printer's control panel, navigate to "Setup" or "Settings".
    2. Find the option to "Restore Factory Defaults" or "Reset Settings".
    3. Confirm the reset and follow any on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
