When using the HP Smart app from my Mac laptop (macOS Sonoma 14.5) to scan, I no longer have control over the scan job or scan settings. It automatically scans the document and doesn't provide these options. How do I fix this? Secondly, where is my scanned document going to on my computer?
Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, etc with no luck.
So frustrating!

Hi @LKB79,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering some frustrating issues with your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw when trying to scan using the HP Smart app on your Mac. Let's tackle these one by one.
Loss of Control Over Scan Job and Settings: This could be due to several reasons, including software glitches, compatibility issues, or settings misconfiguration. Here are some steps you can try to fix this:
- Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed on your Mac. Sometimes, updating the app can resolve compatibility issues.
- Check the app's settings or preferences to see if there's an option to enable advanced scanning options or manual control over scan settings. It's possible that a default setting is causing the app to automatically scan without giving you control.
- Try using a different scanning application, such as Image Capture (built into macOS) or VueScan, to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem lies with the HP Smart app or the scanner itself.
- Reset the printer's settings to default and set it up again from scratch. Sometimes, this can clear out any lingering issues with the device's configuration.
Locating Scanned Documents: By default, scanned documents are usually saved to a predefined location on your computer. Here's how you can find them:
- Open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
- Look for an option or setting that allows you to specify the destination folder for scanned documents. It might be labeled as "Save to" or "Output folder."
- If you can't find such an option in the app, check your Mac's default "Downloads" folder or "Documents" folder. Scanned documents might be saved there automatically.
- If you're still unable to locate the scanned documents, try searching your Mac's file system for files created or modified around the time you scanned the document. This can help you identify where the scanned files are being saved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
