Why can't HP smart software do double sided scans on a HP smart tank plus 651

I just bought an HP smart tank plus 651 and I use the latest HP smart software. I am amazed that the software cannot do automatic double sided scanning like my 15 year old HP ENVY 7640.  This seems like an easy fix.

There is no "fix" -

This model series printer hardware does not support automatic 2-sided scan.

The HP Smart app cannot add a feature the printer lacks.

and

HP Smart is further limited -- it can scan both sides manually but cannot automatically reorder the pages.

Automatic 2-sided scan is available on select high end printers.

HP Scan -- part of the full driver printer software --  includes a Page Size "Detect Content" feature and a Page Sides feature to help scan your document.

Page Size = 2-sided (Manual)

Stack and load the document in the ADF

Scan the front side, of the page(s)

Remove the stack from the output bin - reload as instructed into the ADF

Add the backside(s) of the pages as instructed

The software will re-order the pages for you.

Printer Software 

If you have not yet done so, install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:  

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.

 If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, Fax software is installed to support the setup and use of the Fax driver.

No Sign-in required to use full driver printer software.

Reinstalling?

• Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features. 

  Reference:  Uninstall HP printer software and drivers / HP Smart

• If your printer software includes a separate "Help" segment in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
• Restart the computer and log in.
• If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software – Offline Use Only 

In general, the web pack should load -

Download package > Save > Right-Click on the installation Package > Run as Administrator

If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.

Using USB?  (Re)Connect when instructed to do so.

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one or more shortcuts to the Desktop.

 Note:  Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

• Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
• HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model

OR

• HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
• HP Scan - Shortcut named for itself

AND / OR

• When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut
• NOTE >> If you install the full driver printer software, installing HP Universal Scan as a standalone software from category Software & Drivers is not necessary.  The system will allow you to install both.

Printer Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

HP Scan Assistant shortcut > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable

I don't need full automatic 2-sided scanning. Manual 2-sided like my ENVY used to do before HP smart would be fine. Since HP smart can do one side of a stack and then add the reverse side. It should be a simple software fix to have it reorganize the pages in the proper order.

I was able to install HP Scan as suggested and it does 2-sided scans manually. Why can't HP Smart do the same thing?

"Why" the application does "this" but not "that" is a matter of design.

Dragon Opinion

The HP Smart application is not designed for a specific type of printing / scanning device.

The application is meant to serve a large number of supported devices without breaking when encountering the differences in those devices.

The HP Smart application is sourced from the Microsoft Store -- the installed application is the same for me as for you.

HP Scan software is more closely associated with the device type (printer model) it is meant to support.

For example, the HP Scan software for your printer is not the same as the HP Scan that works on my OfficeJet Pro printer.
