Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Why has HP added a password for using the HP Smart app used to scan?  It never works and I have had to reset the password every single time I want to scan anything.  This is so frustrating and such a waste of time.  I don't need a password for this app.  Is there a way to disable this?

True - the requirement to sign in to use HP Smart was finalized the last month in 2020.

Having to sign in each time you use the application means there is likely some kind of hidden issue that is allowing the application to get stuck.

"20 steps" is too many - sounds odd?  Even if you have to sign-in using your HP Account credentials each time you use the application because the app is stuck or your security software is blocking the app, sign-in should be a simple process - maybe three or four steps / clicks and enter HP Account ID and then HP Account Password.

Short answer:

No, at this writing, there is no way to disable the sign-in requirement for HP Smart.

Use of HP Smart for Windows is not mandatory - that means, you do not have to use the application.

The usual solution if you cannot get HP Smart to work -

OR if you simply do not wish to use the application:

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

Software includes HP Scan - no sign-in required.

Possibly...

Webscan – located in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) – No additional software

This option requires a network connection and EWS

Thanks for your replies.   I will check out the other options.
In answer to the 20 steps.  Every time I attempt to log in it will not accept my login creds.  I have to reset the password which is a multi-step process and I usually have to do it at least twice.  I always set it back to the same password and it never works again after that session.
HP Smart only recently required me to log in each time, it never did prior to a month or two ago.

You are welcome.

Yes, for you description, it seems that using other scan software / options might be better for now, at least.

The Sign-in requirement "should have been there" from what I know about it - obviously though, from your comments, it has not found its way to everyone since it was originally finalized back in 2020.  No, I cannot explain the discrepancy.  ?

That said, application sign-in using your HP Account credentials should work without balking, constantly signing out, refusing to connect, and whatever else is going on.  The process is supposed to be relatively painless, in other words.  It's odd that you have to constantly change the password.

Some of the general issues include:

  • Mesh Networks - printers are not generally fans of the Mesh configuration.
  • Router setup "hopping" between frequencies - printers do not like to hop.
  • Printer not on an assigned SSID named network for the frequency / band used to connect the printer to the network.
  • The obvious:  Printer not on the same network as other devices.
  • Weak router, outdated router, poor location (obstructions), distance.
  • Printer configuration - aforementioned issues with SSID network setup, traffic, location.
