Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Why is my 8600 printer now requiring me to log into HP Smart just to have my printer locally do a scan?   It seems quite invasive for something so normal and local.  Further, why is it pushing me for account information?  If I wanted you to have that, I would have input it originally.  I know you won't change.  But I won't buy another HP printer -- despite always having used your printers in the past -- with these completely unnecessary and identity-invasive practices.  I suspect others feel the same.   (btw, it's taken me 20 minutes to do a scan that should have taken 20 seconds.  Shame on you!)

You do not have to sign in to scan.

You do need to sign in to use the HP Smart application.

The change in the HP Smart application was instituted back at the end of 2020.

Interestingly, we still see an occasional question about the subject - perhaps the change was not universally implemented.  ?

Unfortunately...

The old HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 is not listed as supported in Windows 11.

Windows 11 compatible HP printers

This lack of driver support for your Operating System version does mean that not only is the HP Smart application likely to be troublesome, there are going to be problems with the Full Feature Software drivers that are normally recommended as "no sign in" printer software options for print and scanning operations.

Yes, there are others that feel that signing in to use an application is unwanted.

The only advice we can provide is to not use the offending application.

Welcome to the HP support community.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.
