Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

8740

I realize that the requirement to log in has been around for a few years, but every time I have to do it it makes me scream.

It seems to happen when I am in a hurry, need to scan something and then struggle to remember my username and password.

I was under the impression that the printer was mine when I bought it? So I could use it without asking HP permission?
Yet another reason I will never buy another HP printer.

If somebody would like my 8740, let me know... it's looking for a good home.

And don't give me the "you can scan, but not with HP Smart". Fiddling with the printer while troubleshooting why it's not connecting to the PC is not a reasonable solution to "I just want to scan this document"

Hi @pastafarian4,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP printers often require users to log in to access certain features and functionalities. Here are some reasons why logging in might be required:

  • User Authentication: By requiring users to log in, HP printers can ensure that only authorized individuals can access the printer's settings and features. This helps to maintain security and prevent unauthorized access, such as someone tampering with printer settings or using the printer for unauthorized purposes.
  • Personalization: Logging in allows the printer to associate specific settings and preferences with individual users. For example, different users may have different default print settings, scan destinations, or access to certain features based on their roles or needs.
  • Secure Printing: Some HP printers support secure printing, where documents are held in a print queue until the user authenticates at the printer to release the print job. This prevents sensitive documents from being left unattended in the output tray and reduces the risk of unauthorized access to confidential information.
  • Cloud Services and Remote Printing: If the printer is connected to cloud services or supports remote printing, logging in may be necessary to access those services and manage print jobs remotely.
  • Print Job Tracking and Reporting: For organizations, requiring users to log in can help track and report printing activities, including the number of pages printed, print job history, and associated costs. This information can be valuable for monitoring printer usage and managing resources efficiently.
  • Mobile Printing and App Integration: Some modern HP printers offer mobile printing options and integration with mobile apps. Logging in may be necessary to use these features and access files from cloud storage or email attachments.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
