Why do I need to log in with a HP account to be able to scan a document? I saw someone else also posing this same question on 11-25-2012. however there was no answer. this new procedure makes me concerned about my privacy and it is a hurdle in working efficiency. I appreciate your response.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

 

HP Smart requires that you sign in to the application using your HP Account credentials.

Use of HP Smart is not required to use the printer.

 

Instead,

If you have not done so,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

Full driver printer software includes HP Scan.

Printer Software

 

Use of HP Smart is not mandatory.

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

The driver includes HP Scan – HP Scan supports scanning / saving / printing your scan content.

 

Preparation

 

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Make sure your VPN is switched Off when installing the HP Smart application or the printer software.

 

Printer Software Check - Is the printer software installed?

 

Notes

When the full driver printer software is installed,

Find the printer software listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

 

The installation of the full printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Printer software installed and  listed //  Software is out of date or is not working

 

NOTE:  If the printer software shows installed but is not working as expected, remove and reload the software.

 

NOTE:  Windows 11

Windows Start > Search for Control Panel and open

 

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

 

What if?

If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and is “still hanging around” after you uninstall / Restart...

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

OR

Revo Uninstaller (Free version)

then

Restart the computer and log in

 

 

Reminder:  If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software.  (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.

Next,

Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Restart the computer and log in

 

 Basics

 

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start >> Open Category Software and Drivers > Topic: Software-Utility > Download and save the current version of the Easy Start Software to install your print software
  • When asked, choose to install the Full Driver
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

 

 

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

 

Preparation

 

  • If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers

 

After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers

 If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer and "Remove" > Restart the computer and sign in.

 

  • If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

 

  • Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

 

  • Observation:  It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection.   Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.

 

 

Installation

  • Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

 

If using Easy Start

  • Skip any extra software / offers you do not want – Wording varies as does the number of times you have to “skip” or opt-out of various options.
  • When asked, opt for "Full Software and Drivers" (exact wording might vary).
  • If, after the Full Software and Drivers option is selected, the installation terminates (suddenly stops and disappears – never comes back): Open your Downloads folder > Look for and Right-Click on the full Web installation package and “Run as Administrator

  • Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

 

  • Turn on Wi-Fi on your computer or mobile device and connect to your network. If the computer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disconnect the cable and use the Wi-Fi connection during the setup.

  • HP Smart requires that you sign into the application using your HP Account credentials.

 

  • When working through a browser to access HP Smart, be sure you have Cookies enabled.  If cookies are enabled and you are having trouble, clear Cache and Cookies.   And / Or … Try a different browser – assign that browser as the Default. (Note:  Chrome not working?  Use / Assign a different default browser.)

 

  • Where possible, HP Smart benefits (likes) having the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software installed.  For example, full driver provides access to Shortcuts and Printing Preferences.

 

  • Document includes the HP Smart application download links for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues.
    •  FAQ examples: 
      • What are the requirements to use the HP Smart app?
      • Which printers are compatible with the HP Smart app?
      • Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP Smart app features?

Thank you for your response. Good to have a quick answer. As HP customer for decennia, I have some comments:

  • I understand that I have to do a full download of software.
  • And, I am very pleased that it was successful
  • Also I am pleased that now I found also the OCR software, that was missing in the HP Smart solution.
  • I also have some other comments:
    • You send me a youtube video, which first brings me first commercials. Then I have to look at 4 minutes video and still don’t have a link to the download.
    • Watching the video is uncomfortable. You don’t know what is happening and installing the software is very difficult. You have to switch from video to internet. I suggest you give just a mail instruction
    • During installation HP continually wants to know privacy data such as Inkt usage. And continuously I am bothered with HP spam (sorry to use the word). That is unpleasant. If I want HP continuous inkt monitoring and subscriptions, I will choose my self.
    • On the community nobody knew what the problem was with missing OCR. Can you list this clearly in your Q&A and installation instructions?
    • For new printers, it would be much better if you make full installation the default option.

 

  • I really hope with these suggestions you can improve the customer experience. This whole exercise has taken me hours!

I am glad the issue is resolved.

I am, in fact, part of the HP Community.

This product series includes single license IRIS OCR in the full driver.

Yes, I found our previous interaction - it does appear I was dissuaded from my original opinion concerning the inclusion of OCR in this model group.  I should have simply rechecked the software. 

 

Experts do not work for HP nor do we craft policy.

I agree that the invitations to various services are not always welcomed by all customers.

 

Should we cross paths again, I shall remember and not provide instructions or links to software installation videos.
