When copying, the scanner element (a thin bar) moves left to right and back. It makes a sound that either comes from the electric motor or from plastic gears. It's not a sliding, continuous sound but a rythmic mechanical one (related to the gear teeths). Our old machine (a Canon inkjet all-in-one) did not do this; it made a modern sounding, buzzing noise.
Is this anything to worry about?

@JanVP, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Since the scanner works fine you do not have to worry. If the noise is too loud you can take it to the nearby printer service center or reach out to HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
Hope this helps!
