I also have the "scanner failure" message. I tried the unplugging method, I've seen the scanner bar move totally back and forth. My question is, does the light have to be on during the initialization? If I try to print the test paper, it just just says preparing.....and the blue bar pulsates....and never stops that. Also, I'm not sure, but I think the original ink cartridges might have been 60s and my friend brought over, and replaced them with 60 XLs.....Can that also be a problem. I haven't used it in about 5 years, but know that it does connect to the internet wirelessly....

@JingTingleez, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I see that you have issues with the printer, but the ink isn't a problem because HP 60 and 60 XL are the same.
If you have already performed the steps from the document Resolving a 'Scanner Failure' Message When Scanning, Copying, or Faxing and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.
Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
Hope this helps!
