HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e All-in-One Printer

When using the ADF and the original document is smaller than the paper size, there are black lines around the edges of the document instead of it just clean edges like when using the glass for copies.  This defeats the convenience of having a ADF.  Does anyone have a solution

@CR25A, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
The issue you're experiencing black borders or lines around the edges of copied documents when using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) usually occurs when the original document is smaller than the paper size selected for copying. This happens because the ADF scans the entire area, and any space not covered by the original document appears as black or dark edges.

Here's how to resolve or minimize this issue:

Use the "Fit to Page" or "Resize" Copy Setting

  • On the printer control panel, go to Copy > Settings.
  • Look for Resize or Fit to Page and enable it.
  • This ensures the content is scaled to fit the output page, reducing black borders.

Change Background Color Setting (if available)

  • Some HP printers allow you to change the background fill color when copying.
  • Navigate to Copy Settings > Enhancements > Background Color.
  • Set it to White or Auto to avoid black fill around the document.

Use the Flatbed Scanner for Smaller Originals

  • For best results with smaller documents (e.g., receipts, ID cards), use the scanner glass instead of the ADF.
  • The flatbed scanner detects the edges more accurately and avoids black borders.

Clean the ADF Glass and White Strip

  • Dust or smudges on the ADF glass or white backing strip can cause unwanted lines or shadows.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed.
  • You can update it via the HP Smart app or from the printer's control panel under Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
