All the instructions on this tell me to clean the glass rectangular strip. However, I have a 4500 all in one and there is no glass strip. There is a concave plastic strip. And that strip has a permanent, etched-in scratch exactly where the vertical line is appearing. I didn't use anything except paper in this machine so I don't know what could have scratched it. Is this the problem?\

Yes that would cause that black line. Light shines through from under it onto the paper, so the scratch would interfere with the quality.

Can you tell me why all the other posts from experts answering this question don't mention this plastic concave piece, but rather talk about cleaning a glass rectangle? Where is that glass rectangle?
And most importantly, do I have to throw out the whole machine because of this 10-cent piece of plastic being scratched or can I buy a replacement piece of plsatic and replace it myself?

Hmmm. Okay the part to clean is a very clear piece of glass in the shape of a very long rectangle. Any plastic in there should be colored, don't really need to clean those. Look at the video down in the section Step two: Clean the automatic document feeder (ADF)

On the 6500 that I just looked at you can barely see the glass, it was so clear I at first thought it was missing. The video will show where it is at. Hope it helps.

The trick for me was getting to that ADF window because there was nothing wrong with the glass on the bed of the copier. There are two "covers" to the ADF you need to lift and the second one seems to be stuck (I was afraid of breaking it) but a little gentle pressure gets it done. I was able to see what was causing the vertical lines and clean the glass easiy. Many thanks for the help - saved my derierre.

Yes, HP's video leads one to believe that flipping the ADF up to reveal the glass plate underneath it is simple, and one is surprised when one encounters significant resistance. I gently pried the plastic piece that holds the front post about which one expects the unit to rotate in order to be able to pull the front part of the ADF up just a bit so that I could rotate it with the back post still engaged. Once it the ADF is rotated to reveal the glass plate, the front post can be re-engaged, and the ADF can be rotated back into the closed position. I don't know what prevents it from being rotated upwards so easily.
