hp laser jet pro mfp 3101-3108

bought a hp laser jet pro mfp 3101-3108 series and can send fax but cant receive a fax.

went through all steps and still not working. called support and they tried to charge me $230 to help fix up

You have connected the printer to the phone line? What happens when you try to send do you get an error code.

I can successfully send faxes with no issues, the problem im having is receiving them. everything is hooked up and i followed all steps.

When you call from a mobile phone your phone number does the phone and printer ring? Dou did connect the phone cables correctly, there might be 2 plugs for the telephone and for the phone line on the back side of the printer.

the printer rings and not the phone. i have 2 seperate lines, 1 for my phone and the other is for my printer/fax. ive had the phone carrier tech out and everything is hooked up as it should. when someone tries to send me a fax it gives them a busy signal but i can send a fax to them with no issues.  im ready to give up at this point with HP all together as the customer service agent was no help at all and wanted to charge me just to answer and give resolutions to my questions

Can you confirm that the phone cord goes from the wall directly to the printer on the back side in the upper line plug it should be marked LINE or 1 or something like that.

Is the fax receiving setting set to Automatic? In the fax menu in the printer change fax speed to Medium.

To clarify, you state you have distinctive ring tone set to yes. Do you have distinctive ring tone service or do you have 2 separate lines? Distinctive ring tone is used when you have one phone line and the ring pattern is different between the phone and the fax. If you do not have  distinctive ring service but have it turned on, the fax will never answer the phone. Turn off distinctive ring and try it. It is also possible that if you do have distinctive ring you have the wrong ring pattern selected.
