Hi @ch30ch3,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your MacBook Air is detecting your HP OfficeJet 4500 All-in-One printer but is misidentifying it as a LaserJet, which is likely causing the printing issues. Here's how you can resolve this:

May I know

1. Since when are you facing this issue

2. Have you made any changes on your printer post that this issue raised and have you observed any light blinking on the display and error code

3. May I know if you are using genuine cartridges
4, Could you please elaborate on the issue?

1. Remove the Printer and Re-add It HP printer setup (HP Smart app)

Sometimes, the system misidentifies devices. Try removing the printer and adding it again to ensure it's correctly identified.

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select the HP OfficeJet 4500 (misidentified as a LaserJet) and click the minus (-) button to remove it.
  • After removing it, click the plus (+) button to add the printer again.
  • Ensure the correct printer is selected (it should not show as a LaserJet this time).

2. Install or Reinstall HP Drivers Software and Drivers for HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer Series - G510

Ensure that you have the correct and latest drivers for your printer:

  • Visit the HP support website.
  • Search for "HP OfficeJet 4500" and download the drivers compatible with macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
  • Once downloaded, open the file and follow the installation instructions.
  • After installation, go back to Printers & Scanners, and re-add the printer.

3. Check Printer Settings

After adding the printer, verify the printer driver settings:

  • In Printers & Scanners, select your printer.
  • Click Options & Supplies.
  • Ensure the correct printer model is listed, not a LaserJet.

4. Reset the Printing System

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, resetting the printing system might help.

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) anywhere in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
  • Confirm and enter your Mac’s administrator password.
  • Re-add your printer after the reset.

5. Use AirPrint HP printer setup (Apple AirPrint for iPhone, iPad)

If you’re still having trouble, try using AirPrint, which works without needing special drivers for many printers:

  • In Printers & Scanners, add the printer again.
  • Ensure AirPrint is selected as the printer option when trying to print.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
