Welcome to the HP English Community --
Assuming your mystery printer has an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), it is true that the ADF is limited to certain paper sizes and paper types.
Assuming the printer has the ADF and the paper size / type is supported, then the HP Smart app -- at least for Windows and Mobile - iOS / iPadOS - can set the Source to scan from the ADF.
A few printers, not all, also support Automatic 2-sided scan.
If your printer is not one of the printer that supports that nice feature, it is true that you would have to scan the first side stack, flip, return stack, and scan the second side(s).
