Microsoft Windows 11

My one year old HP LaserJet MFP M139 M142 worked fine but the scanner suddenly stopped working.

I am using HP Smart as recommended.   The printer diagnostics report the printer status is Ready.   It will print and copy.   But when I select Scan, the error message is:  "Couldn't Connect to Scanner".

HI @JerryDahl,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you encounter the "Couldn't Connect to Scanner" error on your HP LaserJet MFP M139 M142, despite the printer being able to print and copy, it indicates a communication issue specifically related to scanning. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Restart Devices

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Restart Your Computer or Device: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

2. Verify Network Connection

  • Ensure that your printer is connected to the same network as your computer or device. Use the printer's control panel or settings to check the network status. For USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected between the printer and your computer.

3. Check Scanner Settings

  • On your computer, open the HP Smart app or the printer software.
  • Navigate to the scanning settings or options.
  • Ensure that the correct scanner is selected and configured. Sometimes, multiple scanners may appear if there are virtual devices or other printers installed.

4. Update HP Smart App

  • Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed on your computer or mobile device. Check for updates in your app store or download the latest version from the HP website.

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This utility can diagnose and resolve common scanning issues automatically.

6. Check Firewall and Security Software

  • Temporarily disable any firewall or security software on your computer to see if they are blocking the scanner. If disabling resolves the issue, configure exceptions or rules to allow communication for the HP printer software.

7. Reinstall HP Smart App or Printer Software

  • Uninstall: Remove the HP Smart app or printer software from your computer:
    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.Find your HP printer software, right-click on it, and select "Uninstall."
  • Reinstall: Visit the HP Support website, download the latest software package for your HP LaserJet MFP M139 M142, and reinstall it.

8. Check Scanner Driver

  • Ensure that the scanner driver is correctly installed and up to date. You can update the driver through Device Manager (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac).

9. Reset Printer:

  • This can usually be done through the printer's control panel or settings menu. Refer to your printer's manual for specific instructions on how to perform a reset

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
