I tightened security on my network and printer by removing printer services I do not need. After deactivating numerous printer features in the Advanced Network Configuration portion of the printer web interface, I found my printer/scanner/fax was able to print ok, but the scanner could not be found. "HP LJ 227M231 could not be found".
After some time troubleshooting, a factory reset, and software reinstall, I found that the real issue is that when I toggled the eSCL feature in the printer web page, my scanning capability would appear / disappear. With it checked, my scanner software opens and works. When it's unchecked, "can't communicate with scanner".
I'm trying to figure out why the eSCL (Airprint-Scan) checkbox is required for my scanner to be seen on my Windows 10 machine. I have Airprint disabled in the web config utility, so I'm at a loss. Without that checkmark in place, the scanner is invisible but I can print without issues.
What's really going on with that checkbox?

@Betty0610, thanks for the comment. If it helps, the printer is connected solely through a wired connection. I have the WS-PRINT, WS-SCAN, and WS-FAX checked in the configuration, and was expecting that to cover everything for my specific needs, so was surprised to see the need for something unrelated to make the scanning work. I have lots of replicable examples to show if you and the team need them.

Hi Betty,
When I access the printer web interface it's over the default port 80. When I did the fresh default install, the printer was found ok and I did not set any specific ports. I did turn off some of the printer services I didn't need (like Apple services, etc). I have the 3 Ws- services, Ipv4 and the unexplained air play one active.
I have a Pepwave Balance 20x. My intranet is unrestricted.
Let me know anything else you need!
Michael
