When I attempt to scan a document, the above error message appears and no other scanning actions are possible. This is the only function of this device that is not working. Everything else (inclusing the wi-fi connection between my Mac and this device) is working properly. I have gone thru all the steps to check the power & wireless connections, software & driver changes, etc. but this error message persists. Is there something else that can be done to restore the scan function? Thanks.

@bmckjb, welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.
I understand that you are unable to scan from your HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer - G510n and also get an error message: "Failed to open a session on the device."
Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the links below:
1. 'No Scan Options' Message (Mac)
2. Network Scanner Connection Error (Mac)
Let me know how that works.
I hope you have a good day ahead.

@bmckjb, thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the issue has not resolved after following the steps from the previous email.
This issue could occur if the scanner is defective.
In order to isolate the issue, you need to make a copy by following the steps provided below and check if it works.
1. Make sure you have paper loaded in the main tray.
2. Place your original face down on the scanner glass. If you are copying a borderless
original, load the original on the scanner glass, not the ADF.
3. Use the left arrow or right arrow to select one of the following functions:
• Copy B&W: To select a black-and-white copy job.
• Copy Color : To select a color copy job.
NOTE: If you have a color original, selecting the Copy B&W function produces a black-and-white copy of the color original, while selecting the Copy Color function produces a full-color copy of the color original.
4. Press OK
5. . Press Start.
I hope you have a good day ahead.
