I have been trying to scan my drawings and the quality is horrible. The color is extremely desaturated, and the resolution looks terrible, even though it's set to 400 dpi. It is brand new, so it is completely clean. I am scanning on the glass.

How can I get it to be the correct color? My pinks, blues, and other colors are coming out grey.

Printer isn't dirty if new - that said, it might not be doing its best.

There isn't much that relates to a brand new printer - it won't take but a couple of minutes to check...

Do make sure all the various tapes, films, and packing materials are removed...

Resolve scan quality problems on HP printers

Next, after you are sure the printer is able to produce a decent scan...

One thing I'd suggest is to back off on the high DPI, at least until you can scan an object without problems.

Next, Try scanning a different photo / image to check the results.

It is difficult to guess precisely what you are doing.

Using a "400" DPI likely means you are not using HP Smart.  ??

There are several ways / methods / software programs you can use to scan images / drawings / photos.

Most of these programs / applications do provide some degree of control over the scan process so you can edit the scan before it is saved to the computer.

For Example

HP Smart - Windows - Scan image > Edit

Open HP Smart application

Select to Scan

Select Source (Glass), Preset (Photo), Scan Area (Entire or Size from the list)

Select Output Type (Color) Resolution (300 DPI), Compression (Medium)

Click Scan to see the initial result...

Tried everything you mentioned.
Scanned another image yet and the color was coming out fine, but it was a bright saturated image vs. the art itself is light colors (watercolor) that are blown out or just coming in as grey. I cant enhance the image like in the screenshots because you cant up the color saturation on GREY. I am using HP smart, 300 DPI - and still desaturated image scans.

The product was introduced in 2018 - there are several models.

Assuming the scan diagnostics passed (part of the everything mentioned),

The printer should scan a decent test photo and provide a decent scan result.

That it cannot do that means the scanner is not working.

The printer hardware / scanner has perhaps failed in spite of passing the diagnostics.

That being the case, software and settings cannot fix the problem.

What else?

Test  the printer COPY function using a decent test photo.

HP Printers - How to Copy

Reminder:  Please do not use one of the drawings for the copy test since you you know these fail to scan.

If the Copy test passes,

Try different scan software?

You did not mention which Operating System / version you are using.

What else?

If you have not done so,

Consider, Update the Firmware

HP ENVY 5000 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

============================================

If you have not done so,

Install the Full Feature Software (full driver)

For example, for Windows 8 and newer

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  2. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  3. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  4. Full driver provides print and scan functions supported by your printer.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The full driver includes HP Scan.

Try using this alternative to the HP Smart application.

Best test on other than the "known to fail" drawings - use a decent image from your collection.

No photos?  Scan a photo from a magazine, flyer, of other source.

If available, set the Page Size to "Detect Photos", else select an available alternative from your list.
