Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you. 
Since your HP 2800e printer is connected via Ethernet but scanning isn’t working and there are no error messages, let’s go through a focused checklist to identify and resolve the issue:

Verify Scanner Availability

  • On Windows: Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, and select Start Scan or check Scanner properties.
  • On Mac: Open Preview > File > Import from Scanner or use the Image Capture app to check if the scanner is listed.

Confirm HP Software Installation

Make sure you’ve installed HP Smart or HP Full Feature Software and Drivers:

  • Download HP Smart for Windows/Mac.
  • Alternatively, use HP Easy Start to install the latest software for your model.
  • If only basic drivers are installed, scanning features may not be available.

Check Windows Services (Only for Windows Users)

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. Ensure these services are Running:
    • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
    • Shell Hardware Detection
    • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

HP Scan Doctor (Windows Only)

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Firewall or Antivirus Interference

Sometimes firewalls or antivirus software block scanning services, especially on network connections:

  • Temporarily disable your firewall/security software and try scanning again.

Try IP-based Scanning

If scanning through HP Smart isn't working:

  1. Open a browser and go to your printer's IP address (find it on the printer's control panel or configuration page).
  2. Look for Scan options via the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Test from Another Device

Try scanning from a different:

  • PC or Mac
  • Mobile device with the HP Smart app (make sure it's on the same network).
