I am scanning very old, very small pictures (about 1 by 1"). On my 8610 the highest resolution I apparently can get is 300 dpi. On my previous 6600 I was able to get 1000 dpi? Is the 8610 really not capable of scanning at such a high resolution?

Hi,
The printer support up to 2400 DPI but only from the Flatbed Glass, while the top Automatic Document Deeder (ADF) is limited to 300 dpi.
Open the HP Officejet Pro 8610 software and press on Scan a Document or Photo.
Change the source from the default 'Automatic Document Feeder' to 'Flatbed Glass', then higher scan resolutions will become avaialble within the Resolution drop-down menu.

Scanning issues…
Please try this scan solution:
HP Scan Extended
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi For Windows.
Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"
