Hi @Thnkful4

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To change the area code for sending faxes from your desktop computer, you'll need to make sure that your fax setup is correctly configured. Fax machines often use a "fax dialer" or software settings to define the area code and other dialing parameters, especially if you're using an internet fax service or a computer to send a fax. Here are the steps to troubleshoot and configure the correct area code settings:

1. Check Fax Software Settings

If you are using Windows Fax and Scan or any third-party fax software, follow these steps to change the area code or dial settings:

For Windows Fax and Scan (built into Windows):

  1. Open Windows Fax and Scan from the Start Menu.
  2. In the application, click on the Fax tab at the top.
  3. Choose Fax Settings.
  4. In the settings, there should be an option to set the area code and possibly other dialing preferences (such as country code, dialing prefix, etc.).
  5. Change the area code to match the one you want to use, then save your settings.

For Third-Party Fax Software:

  • Most fax software will have a Settings or Preferences menu. Look for a section that manages dialing settings and area code preferences, and make the appropriate changes there.

2. Check the Printer's Fax Settings

If you are sending the fax directly from your printer (and it's a fax-capable printer), you might need to adjust the area code settings directly on the printer.

  • On your printer's control panel, navigate to Fax Settings or Fax Preferences (the name can vary depending on the printer model).
  • Look for an option related to dialing prefix, area code, or fax setup.
  • Set the area code to the one corresponding to the location you’re trying to send the fax.

3. Check Fax Modem Settings (If Applicable)

If you are using a fax modem connected to your computer, you might need to configure the dialing rules. Some fax modems allow you to set the area code and other dialing parameters.

  • Open the fax modem’s configuration tool (this could be from the fax software you're using).
  • Check the dialing rules or regional settings to ensure the correct area code is set.

4. Mobile Device vs. Desktop

Since the fax works from your mobile device, it’s possible that the mobile fax app you’re using is automatically handling the area code and dialing rules. When faxing from a mobile app, the app may use the number you input directly without needing to adjust dialing settings. However, desktop fax software or physical fax machines require manual configuration for the area code.

I hope this helps.
