I've had this printer for 4 yrs now and there are some set backs a few months back.
1st it has a scan feature on hp smart , but now it says feature unavailable.
2nd was the printer quality 's bad, so i tried to clean the dots where the ink was, but to no avail. tried printing docs it's either blank or has lines in it (lots of it) .
is there any way that it can be cleaned without having it opened ? previously there's a feature that you can diagnose the printer quality , clean its ink head but now i can't seem to find it. is there anyone who can help me on how to do the diagnostic ?
PS: warranty expired years ago 🙂

Hi @sheiladee19,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for explaining the situation clearly. Since your HP DeskJet Plus Ink Advantage 6475 is showing both scan feature issues and print quality problems, here’s a complete guide to help you restore functionality, without opening the printer.
1. Fix “Scan Feature Unavailable” in HP Smart
This usually happens due to:
- HP Smart app updates
- The printer is not being properly connected
- Windows/macOS permissions
Try This:
- Update HP Smart App from the Microsoft Store or HP Smart for macOS.
- Re-add the printer:
- Open HP Smart → Click the printer’s name → “Hide Printer”
- Click “+” to add it again.
- Enable Scan to Computer:
- In HP Smart, go to Printer Settings > Scan > Manage Scan to Computer.
- Turn it ON.
If the scan option is still unavailable, try using the HP Scan and Capture app or Windows Fax and Scan as a workaround.
2. Fix Print Quality Issues (Blank Pages, Lines, Faded Text)
Since you mentioned that cleaning the ink area manually didn’t help, use the built-in printhead cleaning tools:
Use HP Smart’s Print Quality Tools:
- Open HP Smart.
- Go to Printer Settings > Print Quality Tools.
- Run:
- Clean Printhead
- Align Printhead
- Print Diagnostic Page
If you don’t see these options, go to the HP Printer Diagnostic Tool and run it from your browser.
Optional: Manual Printhead Cleaning (Without Opening the Printer)
If the above doesn’t work:
- Remove the cartridges.
- Gently blot the nozzle area (not the copper contacts) with a damp lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry and reinstall.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
