Hi @edwmar,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you're always getting a busy signal when trying to send a fax from your HP Smart Tank 5105 on Windows 11, here are some things to check:

Verify the Fax Number

  • Double-check that you are dialing the correct fax number.
  • Ensure you are including any necessary area codes or prefix numbers required by your telephone provider.

Check for Line Issues

  • Pick up a regular phone connected to the same phone line and try calling the fax number manually.
    • If you hear a busy signal, the issue is with the recipient’s fax line (not your printer).
    • If you hear a fax tone, it means your printer is not sending the fax correctly.

Check Your Phone Line Setup

  • Make sure the phone line is working properly. Try plugging a regular phone into the same wall jack and listen for a dial tone.
  • If you have VOIP (Internet-based phone services like fiber, cable, or VoIP services like MagicJack, Vonage, or a digital phone service), make sure:
    • Your fax machine is connected to the correct fax port on your router.
    • You are using a standard telephone cord, not a DSL filter.
    • The phone service supports faxing. Some VoIP services do not support fax transmission properly.

Check Fax Settings

  • Make sure the line is set to ‘Tone’ and not ‘Pulse’ dialing.
  • Lower the baud rate (transmission speed) in your fax settings. Some phone lines may not support high speeds.
    • On the printer control panel, go to Fax Settings → Fax Setup → Fax Speed and select Medium (14,400 bps) or Basic (9,600 bps) instead of High (33,600 bps).
  • Enable Error Correction Mode (ECM) in the fax settings.
  • If you use a DSL internet service, make sure you are using a DSL filter.

Test with a Different Number

  • Try faxing to a different number to check if the issue is only with one specific recipient.
  • If your printer has a built-in self-test feature or fax test report, use it to diagnose issues.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to the HP Support website and enter your printer model (HP Smart Tank 5105).
  • Download and install any available firmware updates for the printer.

Let me know what helps.
