Hi @PRT44,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your OfficeJet Pro 6978 isn’t able to Scan to Computer on macOS Sequoia 15.5. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Make sure the printer and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network
• Open the printer’s Wi-Fi settings and confirm it shows the same network name your Mac is using.
• “Scan to Computer” won’t work across different bands or guest networks.

Remove and re-add the printer on macOS
• Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
• Select the printer → Remove Printer.
• Click Add Printer → choose the 6978 → make sure it adds as AirPrint or Secure AirPrint.
• HP drivers for older printers on macOS Sequoia depend on AirPrint.

Enable “Scan to Computer” from HP Smart
• Open the HP Smart app → Printer Settings.
• Go to Advanced > Scan Settings / Scan to Computer.
• Make sure “Enable Scan to Computer” is turned on.

Check if macOS blocked the HP extensions
• Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security.
• Scroll down and look for “Allow” next to HP software, HP scanners, or system extensions.

Restart the HP Smart background services
• Quit HP Smart completely.
• Restart your Mac.
• Reopen HP Smart and try scanning again from the app first.

Print a Network Report to verify connectivity
• On the printer: Setup → Reports → Network Configuration Page.
• Check that it shows “Connected” with a valid IP address.

Use the printer’s IP address to add a scanner (manual method)
• In Printers & Scanners → Add → IP tab.
• Enter the printer’s IP → Protocol: AirPrint.
• This forces macOS to create a fresh communication path.

Try scanning from the printer control panel again
• On the printer → Scan → Computer.
• Your Mac should now appear in the list.

I hope this helps.
