Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have been working to find out why my PC seems to have random hangs (just locks up).  I have been noticing that after scanning, and closing the HP Scan application, that in task manager, perfomance window that one of the cores is maxed out.  I have tracked it down to the HPscan.exe process.

Can someone explain why it is not closing when the application window is closed, and if there is a fix to get it to close the process?  If that process needs to keep running to allow for scan to file to work, then is there a fix to prevent it from using so much CPU power?

Thank you for any help on this you can give.
