macbook air running Sequoia 15.2 doesn't recognize that the printer is also a scanner. Printer shows up as a printer and a fax but not as a scanner. I cannot use Mac's Image Capture program to scan.

@fbjacobo, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Thanks for explaining the issue clearly — let's fix that scanner recognition problem on your MacBook Air running macOS Sequoia 15.2.

Here are the steps you can try:

Remove and Re-add the Printer (Correctly as a Scanner):

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Select your printer from the list and click Remove Printer.

Now click the Add Printer.

Wait a few seconds for your printer to appear — don’t select AirPrint or Fax by default if it shows up that way.

Instead, click Use: and choose your printer’s official driver (not "AirPrint" or "Generic PCL/PS").

If a scanner option is available, it should now show as a multifunction printer.

Reset Printing System (if Step 1 fails):

In Printers & Scanners, right-click in the printer list area and choose "Reset printing system...".

This removes all printers and scanners and resets the print system.

Then add the printer again using the step above.

Update Drivers via HP Smart or HP offecial Site:

Install or update the HP Smart app from the App Store. It often restores scanning functionality.

Alternatively, download the latest full driver package directly from HP’s official site, rather than relying on AirPrint.

Use Preview or HP Smart to Scan (instead of Image Capture):

Open the HP Smart app or Preview > File > Import from Scanner.

If the scanner still doesn’t appear, HP Smart may provide a better interface to access scan features.

Check for Scanner via System Information:

Open System Information > USB or Printers section.

See if the scanner portion of your printer is listed there. If not, the OS might not be seeing it due to a driver or connection issue.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
