muti-pagescan to PDF

printer / scanner has worked flawlessly for 3 years, but recently I can no longer scan multiple pages to PDF.

it will scan page 1 fine, it will scan page 2 fine, when it scans page 3 it just disappears from preview .

no changes have been made to comp.or other hardware, except for updates

Check the resolution, should be set to 300 dpi or less. Then the "+" should appear and you can add more scans.
In your case, I recommend setting the resolution to 200 dpi or less.

If this does not help, the software must be reinstalled.
