my printer description says it has scanning bu I see no directions/buttons for scanning

It's a DeskJet -- and the printer lacks a full touchscreen Printer Control Panel.

Scan is available using other tools - that is, applications and software designed to work with your printer and your Operating System / version.

For example,

Using the Embedded Web Server - EWS > Web Scan

HP Smart (for Windows) - there is also an HP Smart Mobile for supported OS versions.

HP Scan - Windows - part of the Full Driver printer Software

Windows Scan - Built into your Windows Operating System

Windows Fax and Scan - Also part of Windows

Paint - Windows standard - for photos / images

First Time Use Only – Standard EWS - Enable Webscan

• Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
• Tab Settings > Security > Administrator Settings > Enable >> Check box next to Webscan
• Click Apply to save any changes

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Scan > Webscan

OR

First Time Use Only - Alternate EWS - Enable Web Scan

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Network > Remote Scan > Item Web Scan = Switch ON
