It's obvious that "scan to email" (STE) and "fax to email" (FTE) were created by different teams. Mainly because the former works and the latter doesn't.
I'm having the exact same issue as described here.
However, for me, the SMTP config works just fine for STE (and alerts) but NOT for FTE.
Trying to set up FTE with the EXACT same parameters that are consistently successful for STE results in the error:
This happens exactly the same with both hotmail.com and gmail.com. I have 2FA enabled on both and know full well how to create app passwords.
Please advise.
PS - I'll leave the unnecessarily clunky and inconsistent GUI of each feature for a different post.

Hi @Dwaine
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.
Are you trying to forward incoming fax to your email?
Let us try these steps:
(a) Touch the wireless icon on the printer and record its IP address,
(b) Open a web browser on your computer and type printer IP address on the URL area then hit Enter.
(c) Select Fax tab and expand HP Digital Fax section,
(d) Now click Setup to enter the information required for Digital Fax to Email.
For more info on how to use Digital Fax, kindly refer to this document.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
Click the “Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!
