HP officejet pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

HP Officejet Pro 8600, Win7 pro 32 bit, LAN connection, but I only have a computer and printer, not link to others or such.

I have been scanning things forever with no problem. Today I first learned about the printer assistant and finding it and doing scans with previews and such. So, I tried it and scanned a document to a pdf - new for me.  Since that scan when I scan an 8 1/2 x 11 document to a jpg file the resulting size, not of the file but the image is  1700 x 2338 px. That's ridiculous and nothing I have tried, the advanced settings sliding the slider to nothing, setting dpi to the lowest fixes anything. I can't possibly even use the scan if I cannot get that fixed. I even clicked the restore defaults. Still the same size. Thanks for any help.  [I don't know why it says to list connection because I'm not doing anything print wise on the internet, but I'm LAN]
