@Jack7305, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The flashing scan light when the scanner lid is open on your HP Smart Tank 7305 All-in-One is normal behavior and not an error. Here's why it happens and what you can do:

Why the Scan Light Flashes

When you open the scanner lid, the scanner lamp activates to prepare for a scan or copy job. This flashing or pulsing light is part of the scanner's warm-up and readiness process. It does not indicate a fault unless accompanied by an error code or warning light on the control panel.

What You Should Check

No Error Code?
If the control panel does not show an error (like E3 or E4) and the printer is responsive, the flashing scan light is expected.

Error Code Displayed?
If you see an error code (e.g., E3, E4), refer to this HP guide for blinking light patterns and error meanings:
HP Smart Tank 6000, 7000, 7300, 7600 Printers - Blinking lights and error codes | HP® Support

Copy/Scan Functionality Test

  • Place a document on the scanner glass.
  • Press the Copy or Scan button.
  • If the job completes successfully, the scanner is functioning correctly.

Troubleshooting (if scan fails)

If the scan light flashes but the scan/copy doesn’t work:

  • Power cycle the printer: Turn it off, unplug for 60 seconds, then restart.
  • Update firmware: Use the HP Smart app or visit Official HP® Support

 Virtual Assistant

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
