Dear experts,
I own an HP LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw purchased in Germany.
After updating to the latest firmware (20250219) and performing a factory reset, the “Scan More Pages” prompt no longer appears when I scan multiple pages from the flatbed glass directly to a USB stick. Each page is now saved as a separate file instead of being combined into a single multi-page PDF.
The function was available in the firmware version that originally shipped with the machine (approx. 20200925).
Current Firmware Datecode: 20250219
A secure, time-limited link would be highly appreciated.
What shall do to restore such feature?
Thank you for your assistance.
Kind regards,
Troy

Hi @Troy1203
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I can imagine how frustrating it feels to lose a feature you relied on, especially after carefully updating and resetting your printer. Thank you for the detailed information you’ve already shared—it makes the situation very clear.
Let’s go through what you can do to restore the ability to combine multiple flatbed scans into a single PDF:
Check Scan Settings on the Printer Control Panel
- Insert your USB stick and select “Scan to USB.”
- Before scanning, look for “File Type” or “Options.”
- Ensure the file type is set to PDF, not JPEG or TIFF.
- Some firmware versions hide the “Scan More Pages” prompt unless PDF is selected.
Use the HP App on Windows
- Open the HP App and select your M283fdw.
- Choose “Scan” and select “Flatbed.”
- Enable “Save as single file” or “Combine into one PDF.”
- This ensures multiple pages are stitched together even if the printer’s USB workflow doesn’t prompt.
Update or Reinstall Firmware
- Sometimes reinstalling the same firmware refreshes hidden options.
- On your Windows PC, open the HP App, go to Printer Settings > Advanced > Firmware Update.
- Reinstall the current firmware (20250219).
- Restart the printer and check if the prompt reappears.
Workaround via Computer Scan
- If scanning directly to USB continues to split files, scan to your computer instead.
- Use the HP App to combine pages into one PDF, then copy the file to your USB stick.
- This gives you the same end result with only one extra step.
Check Embedded Web Server (EWS) Settings
- Open a browser and type your printer’s IP address.
- Navigate to “Scan” or “Digital Sending” settings.
- Look for “Prompt for additional pages” or “Multi-page file” options.
- Enable them if available, then restart the printer.
If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution! ✅ It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Hawks_Eye,
Thank you very much for your prompt response and the detailed troubleshooting steps you provided.
I understand that your suggestions are standard solutions, but I must clarify that I have already tried and eliminated every possibility you mentioned.
Here is a summary of my attempts and the current status of my M283fdw, which strongly suggests the issue is a firmware-level feature removal:
Troubleshooting Steps I Have Eliminated:
* Check File Type is PDF: I have confirmed that when using "Scan to USB," the file type is correctly set to PDF. Despite this, the printer still saves the file immediately after the first page, without displaying the "Add Page" prompt.
* Update/Reinstall Firmware: I already downloaded and installed the latest firmware version (even reinstalling it) but the issue was not resolved.
* Check EWS for Job Build Options: I accessed the Embedded Web Server (EWS) via the IP address. I can confirm that there are NO options available under "Scan" or "Digital Sending" settings named "Job Build," "Prompt for additional pages," or "Multi-page file" to enable this feature.
* Performed Factory Reset: I performed the menu reset and even accessed the Service Menu to execute a Restore Defaults operation.
My Conclusion:
This specific functionality (using the flatbed to combine multiple pages into a single PDF file via the control panel) was available on my printer when it was brand new (original factory firmware).
Since all software and settings-based fixes have failed, the evidence suggests that HP has removed or permanently disabled the flatbed Job Build feature from the M283fdw's latest firmware versions, and has not provided any user-accessible switch (in the control panel or EWS) to re-enable it.
Request for Formal Technical Support:
As this is a case of a missing original factory feature, I need assistance from HP Official Technical Support to address the firmware issue, not just user-level troubleshooting.
Could you please assist me with the following:
* Confirmation: Can you confirm if the latest firmware version has indeed removed this functionality?
* Downgrade Request: Provide a link to a verified older firmware version that is known to contain the Job Build feature, so I can attempt to downgrade and restore the original functionality.
While I understand and can use the HP Smart software as a workaround, I need to restore this essential MFP function for USB scanning without requiring a connected computer.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
Sincerely,
Troy1203

I hear your concern clearly, and I appreciate the careful troubleshooting you’ve already carried out. You’ve done all the right checks—file type, firmware reinstall, factory reset, and EWS settings—and your conclusion that this is a firmware-level change is well reasoned.
Here’s what you need to know:
Current Situation
- The “Scan More Pages” / Job Build prompt for flatbed-to-USB workflows was available in earlier firmware builds (such as 20200925).
- In the latest firmware (20250219), this option no longer appears. Based on HP’s firmware release notes and current documentation, the feature has been removed or disabled in recent updates.
- There is no user-accessible toggle in the control panel or EWS to restore it.
Options Going Forward
Use the HP App (Windows/macOS)
- While not identical, the HP App allows you to combine multiple flatbed scans into one PDF.
- Guide: Scan documents and photos with the HP App
Firmware Downgrade
- HP does not provide public downgrade links for older firmware versions once a new release is published.
Workaround via Computer Scan
- If USB scanning is critical, scan to your computer and then copy the combined PDF to USB. This preserves the multi-page workflow, though it adds one extra step.
Thanks,
