@Bryan2199, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand you're encountering scanner error codes 17, 16, and 23 repeatedly when trying to scan or after printing for a while. These errors typically indicate scanner hardware or power-related issues. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this:

Power Reset the Printer

This helps clear temporary hardware faults:

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Scanner Bar Movement

  • Open the scanner lid and remove any documents.
  • Press the Copy button or icon.
  • Observe the scanner bar:
    • It should light up and move across the glass.
    • If it doesn’t move or light up, the scanner hardware may need servicing.

Reinstall Printer Software

Corrupted drivers can cause scanning issues:

  • Remove the printer from your system:
    • On Windows: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Remove device.
    • On macOS: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click the minus (-) button.
  • Reinstall using the HP Smart App:
    • Download from the HP Smart download page. HP Smart
    • Follow the guided setup to reconnect your printer.

Firmware Update

Outdated firmware can cause recurring errors:
