Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

I had to replace my 9015e and the HP scan app apparently is no longer operable and no longer supported.  Which is too bad because it's superior in every way to the HP Smart app.  Two current problems--a couple of years ago, using the HP scan app, I could easily scan multiple photos that were easily recognized.  The HP smart app is useless for photos--if it works at all, it recognizes a single photo (and yes, I've selected the detect edges option).  So what do I do with my photos?  (And yes, I've installed all the software, and an HP agent specifically assisted with that effort.  The other issue is more annoying than anything else--the HP scan app allowed you to select, more or less permanently, the PDF searchable option.  Not so with the HP smart app--another step is required.  Why?  Is there any to select, and keep, PDF searchable as the scan option?

Welcome back to the HP English Community --

It's unclear (to me) whether you replaced the old 9015e with the same model.

Assuming yes - same model for the sake of the answer.

The software available for the printer has not changed --

  • The original formatted HP Scan is still part of the full driver printer software.
  • The HP Universal Scan software is still available as a companion to the full driver or as a separate (stand alone) installation.
  • Other Scan software is still available.

Example - Shortcuts on the Desktop - Full Driver and other software / apps installed

Printer_Assistant_Scan_Assistant_Shortcut_Icons_on_Desktop_8Printer_Assistant_Scan_Assistant_Shortcut_Icons_on_Desktop_8

One App Caveat:

HP Scan and Capture was retired early in 2024 -- If you still have the app installed, it can be used.  The Scan and Capture app is no longer available for download from the Microsoft Store.

----------------------------------------

Your comments about HP Smart reflect those of others who choose not to use the app --

  • HP Smart is clever for what it can do; it is certainly not mandatory that you use the app.

and

  • True - The Detect Edges feature in HP Smart is not the same option as "Detect Photos" in HP Scan / HP Universal Scan software used with Page Size.  In HP Smart the feature is used to try and detect the boundaries of the individual scanned image content.
  • HP_Smart_Win_Scan_Photo_Share_5HP_Smart_Win_Scan_Photo_Share_5

What to do?

If, as you say, you have the full driver printer software installed, check your Desktop for the apps / shortcut(s) you want to use.

Example - Programs and Features - Installed Printer Software

Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_18Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_18

What else?

If you do not have the full driver printer software installed

OR

If you have the full driver installed and it is not working as expected,

then

Install the Driver > Restart the computer and log in

Optionally install the Universal Scan Software

and / or

Check that Printer Properties is calling (set to) the HP Driver and not the Microsoft / IPP driver option.

====================================

Printer Software

If you have not yet done so, install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver generally adds at one, possibly least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop: Printer Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and/or HP Scan.

NOTES:

HP Scan is not installed if the printer does not support Scan.

The Printer Assistant is not installed if the type of full driver software does not support it.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.

No Sign-in required to use full driver printer software.

Reinstalling?

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.
  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

This is VERY helpful.  I'll try to work through this and see if it gets me to where I was before I replaced my 9015 with a new unit (and yes, my note was unclear on this point--the 9015 is a great unit).  My one comment--it should not be as complicated as this has become to deal with basic photo scanning issues.

As noted, this was very helpful and I think I now have the proper software loaded (that was a bit of an adventure but we got there).  But I'm still not getting recognition of individual photos; even at maximum separation, the photos are not separately identified as was the case with the last series 9015 printer..  It's possible (entirely likely) that it's operator error, but if so, I haven't found it yet. These are the settings in place at the moment:

You are welcome.

Check / Adjust the Page Size setting on the right side of the main menu.

Needs to be set to "Detect Photos".

Now this is interesting.  I can find (and had previously found) all of the settings you mention here.  The one setting that I cannot find is "detect photos" which would explain the problem, I suppose.  I've carefully gone through the submenu for page size and it simply isn't there--the available options, and only those options, are shown in the image below.  I then checked all the other submenus and nothing is there, either.  The locate features box doesn't return any values for any search items, so I'm not sure what that box does.  The PDF scan program works like a charm for everything else OTHER than photos.   Again, it wouldn't surprise me if I'm missing something obvious, but that's what I have right now.

Not sure.

Your printer is older than my 9135e but these are not radically different printer models.

One of your images from earlier does show "other than expected" selection in More > Scan sub-menu

For example, Scan "Item Type" should be set to Photo

DragonFur_0-1735078544961.png

If you have not done so, consider removing any "edits" you made to the "Save as JPEG" shortcut template.

Removing the edits from the template should set it back to default, at least.

DragonFur_1-1735078727251.png

What else?

It might be as simple (in addition to any changes to the shortcut template) to issue a Reset to the printer.

The simplest Power Reset consists of the following:

Unplug the printer (while it is on) --

Waiting at least a minute --

Plug the printer into a standard power outlet and boot

I spent some time nosing around on the HP support site and discovered a January 2024 update to HP scan (not sure how I found it and not sure I could find it again).  Operating on the hopeful assumption this might fix my problem, I downloaded the update, did a restart and sure enough "detect photos" (which appears nowhere on my previous iterations of the HP Scan program) now appears as a submenu, a test scan reveals that photos are now detected, and all is right with the world.  (Well, everything but that last item, I guess).  Dragon-fur's advice and very helpful step by step approach to this problem was excellent and I recommend it upon initial setup--you'll save yourself all kinds of headaches.  And when all else fails, check to see if there is a current update.  Thanks.

Thanks for the update.

Good news!

For those reading -- Details...

The January 2024 update is for OCR.

What?

In mid-2022, many of the embedded OCR packages were removed from the full driver printer software.  Whether OCR was removed depended on the printer model and type, the full driver package, and possibly other factors.  No, we were never told why - Licensing?  Compatibility?  "Something".

Presumably, this series of printers was never affected by the removal (different OCR software?)

Regardless, the Update is listed (at least for Windows 11) in Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e All-in-One Printer

The webpage :

HP Scan OCR Add-on Software

Description

HP Scan OCR Add-on Software provides OCR and OCR related functionalities and is designed to be used as a plugin for HP Scan Software. This add-on is already available as part of the HP Scan Full Webpack.

The size of the "update" indicates that the package is large enough to include all of the HP Scan software.

Reloading the Update ( HP Scan portion of the full driver printer software) might indeed impact existing printer software on the computer that -- for whatever reason -- needed to be reinstalled.

True -- According to the description, the update is included in the full driver printer software package.

Now, the New Year is looking brighter.

Smiling.
