I am having scanning problems on my HP envy 4500. I have a mac with operating system macOS big sur version 11.4

I get this message: make sure the printer software is installed on your computer and that scan to computer is enabled. I'm able to print, but not scan...Can someone give me instructions on how to enable scan to computer?

@SUNDEVIL79, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are trying to scan from the printer screen to the Mac.

Have you tried scanning from the Mac using a scanning application and check if that works?

You may use the HP Smart app or the HP Easy Scan apps from the App Store.

For more info, refer to - How to scan with an HP printer

It sounds like Scan to Computer is disabled on your Mac. Enabling Scan to computer using HP Utility may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:

1.) On your Mac, click Finder, click Applications, click the Hewlett-Packard or HP folder, then double-click HP Utility. (If HP Utility is not available, download and install the printer essential software from here

2.) Under Scan Settings, click Scan to Computer, then make sure the Enable Scan to Computer check box is selected.

3.) Try to scan.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

HP SUPPORT please note all these issues on devices in the same week with inability to suddenly SCAN:

HP5255; HP6812; HP5740 and HP4500.  Was something updated on these devices?

No, it has not solved the problem. I went through the process, but when i try to scan after i completed the steps, there is only a print queue, and not a scan option

@SUNDEVIL79

Were you able to enable scan to computer option using the HP Utility?

Where do you see the print queue?

The scan to computer option is available on the printer screen.

If the issue persists, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

That means the printer is not installed as 'Bonjour multifunction'.

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Note: Select "Bonjour multifunction" under kind while installing.

Now, check under system preferences for the scan option.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
