I can print from the normal Apple print function, but I cannot scan from there - scanning is not recognized. It is very clunky to have to find the HP app and scan from there. Interestingly, a client of mine has an HP 577 and I have no issues scanning from that on my normal mac function.

I see that you are not able to scan. You may use the HP Smart app or HP Easy Scan app from App Store to scan from the Mac.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for any software updates on Mac
Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.
