@bevcap, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When encountering an error like "server doesn't support secure connection" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer while scanning, it usually indicates an issue with the printer’s connection to the network or the email server you’re trying to scan to. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Check Email Settings (for scanning to email)

If you're scanning directly to email, check the email settings on the printer:

  • SMTP Server: Ensure that the correct SMTP server address is entered (e.g., smtp.gmail.com for Gmail, smtp.office365.com for Outlook).
  • Port Number: Verify that you are using the correct port for secure connections:
    • Gmail: Port 465 or 587 (SSL/TLS).
    • Outlook/Office365: Port 587 (STARTTLS).
    • Other providers may use different ports (consult your email provider for details).
  • Encryption Type: Ensure the encryption method is set to SSL/TLS or STARTTLS (depending on your email provider).

Check Network Connection

  • Wi-Fi Connection: Make sure the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network and has internet access.
  • Network Security: If your network is using certain firewall or security settings, it may block the secure connection needed by the printer. Check with your network administrator to ensure there are no firewall issues.

Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes, an outdated firmware version can cause connection problems. Ensure your printer firmware is up-to-date:

  1. Go to the printer’s control panel.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  3. If an update is available, proceed to update the firmware.

You can also update the firmware via the HP Smart app or HP’s website.

Reset Network Settings

Resetting the network settings on the printer may help if the issue is related to the printer's connection:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.
  2. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

Check for SSL/TLS Issues

If you’re scanning to an email or a cloud service, it could be that the printer is not able to establish a secure connection because SSL/TLS is disabled. In that case:

  • Go to the printer’s web interface (usually accessible by typing the printer's IP address into a web browser).
  • Log in to the settings using the admin password (if set).
  • Look for SSL/TLS settings under Email Settings and ensure SSL/TLS is enabled.

Try Scanning to a Different Destination

  • If you're scanning to an email, try scanning to a different email account or another service (like Google Drive or Dropbox) to rule out email server issues.
  • If scanning to a network folder, ensure the folder path and permissions are correct.

Reconfigure Scan to Email

If scanning to email is consistently failing, it may help to remove and then reconfigure the email settings on the printer:

  1. Go to the Email Settings in the printer’s control panel.
  2. Delete the current email configuration.
  3. Set up the email account again, using the correct settings for your email provider.

Check Email Server Settings and Permissions

Ensure that your email service supports SMTP connections and secure email scanning. Some email providers (like Gmail) may require special settings like enabling "less secure apps" or creating an app-specific password.

  • Gmail: Ensure that you’ve enabled access for less secure apps or set up an "App password" if 2-step verification is enabled.

Reboot Printer and Router

  • Sometimes, simply restarting both the printer and your router can resolve network or connection issues.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
